We left from Wentworth to visit Perry’s
Sandhill’s just out of town where
we got
some great photos and Reg Ragen made
a surprise celebrity appearance!
After an early lunch at Coombah Roadhouse
we headed towards South Australia
and Quandong Station, creating plenty
of dust as we drove past the Danggali
Conservation Park on a narrow and windy
track with plenty of blind corners.
The trip must have become a bit boring
for those not concentrating on seeing
through the dust ahead: a live version
of a 2006 Great Escape radio show was
broadcast impromptu over CB radio
channel 21 – normally used for
rally related
communication between the cars… Any
locals listening would have been
thoroughly entertained and amused!
Still on the road, the South Flinders
Ranges started appearing magnificently
along the horizon, creating a fantastic
view seemingly all around us as tails
of
dust rose from the cars spaced out
along the road to Yunta.
On reaching Yunta, the hobby horse
races were definitely the highlight
of the day!
They were extremely competitive with
photo finishes being called into play
once
or twice! After five very close heats,
the final determined that Scott McMullen,
representing Car 222 had the fastest
hobby horse there, and was awarded
as the
winner of the day!!
