This morning we left Yunta racecourse
behind, as well as a few of the hobby
horses that didn’t fare too well
after the races and a raucous but chilly
night of
camping!
The drive to Hawker for lunch was very
enjoyable and scenic as we headed North
West through South Australia towards
the spectacular Flinders Rangers. The
country was arid and rocky, with plenty
of dust still managing to find its
way quickly
into most of the cars.
The roads were mainly clear of stock,
but drivers had to be on the look-out
for the
plentiful blind crests and corners
that could appear very quickly if the
dust from the
car in front was still hanging in the
air!
Lunch at Hawker was followed by some
leisurely golf and lawn bowls – the
competition wasn’t too serious,
and being consistent with the rest
of the rally, the
laughs were plentiful! However, Hawker
was the scene of the first injury of
the rally.
Karl from Car 37, OH&S, was standing
in the wrong place at the wrong time
when
a golf ball landed on his head… he
put on a brave face though, and continued
driving towards the Flinders Rangers
National Park where the rally encountered
the most spectacular scenery of the
day.
The afternoon drive gave a fantastic
tour of the Flinders Rangers National
Park,
allowing for stops at lookouts and
other scenic spots. All enjoyed, except
for Car
303 (The Mongrel) who took a turn a
little overzealously and ended up over
an
embankment – giving the rally
officials an opportunity to hone their
vehicle
recovery skills, while luckily, no
first aid was required and Car 303
is right to start
off to Birdsville in the morning with
the rest of the rally.
Upon arriving at Leigh Creek and being
greeted along the streets by school
children, an auction including items
donated locally took place. The stand
out of the
event was the auction of a beautiful
quilt made by ladies of Leigh Creek,
which was
won for $1,300 by Tony and Paul, the
Creon Crusaders in Car 13, corporate
representatives on the rally for Solvay
Pharmaceuticals.
