DAY 4 : Leigh Creek to Birdsville via Mungerannie

We had a very early start from Leigh Creek for a fairly long drive. We left and were on the road before the sun had risen, cruising past the Farina railway ruins before stopping at Maree Pub – we were there before 9am SA time, and while a little surprised, all the locals were very welcoming and hospitable!

From Maree the Great Escape convey continued North onto the Birdsville Track and into the Tivari Desert, where one car found an oasis at Clayton Station.

A spa bath built for four had been installed with water warming to 52 degrees celsius from hot springs. There were also very civilised toilets and showers installed – just for us in the middle of nowhere!

After pushing onto Mungerannie Hotel for lunch and a much appreciated
hamburger, we headed north again along the Birdsville Track, into the Sturt Stony Desert before arriving at Birdsville late afternoon to a very well organised camp!!

Everyone was fed extremely well before having a chance to have a look around the town. The Birdsville Hotel and Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe were the main attractions, the Boxing Troupe being that last (legal) one in Australia and the Birdsville Hotel being infamous! Skinner Bob turned into Karen Bob, when he swapped clothes and places with a lady from a retirement village bus also on the way to Birdsville! He did raise $150 during the day though!

The Great Escape did experience an unfortunate incident today with Car 7, Blue Streak, having an accident on the way to Birdsville, which required one of the crewmembers being flown out to Adelaide for medical attention on his arm. His family have been notified and all other crewmembers of Car 7 were unhurt and will continue on the rally in their car. If there are any concerns please call 02 9878 5250.
