No driving today as we had the entire day
to spend in and around Birdsville, and at
the races. The free day provided a great opportunity
for people to have a bit of recreational time,
doing whatever they felt like for the day!
Some of the more popular activities included
heading to ‘Big Red’ for a look
at the sandhill that starts the desert, once
up and over the first, there is another sandhill
five hundred metres away, and another 500
metres after that, and another, and another…!
Great fun to go and have a look and take the
challenge of driving over, but it could become
tiring by the time you got over them all!
Lunch was another gourmet delight! After
seafood and salad, finished off with some
beautiful wine donated by Nick de Stefani
of Reedy Creek Winery most of the camp headed
to the racetrack to have a look at how the
locals do it! They do it with plenty of heat,
dust and beer!! There were reports of temperatures
over 40 degrees Celsius, and there wasn’t
a patch of green to be seen! All our participants
looked spectacular, with plenty of people
coming up to have a chat and find out all
about what we were up to. There were a few
bets put on, and a few won and lost, but our
major achievement for the day was surviving
the races and making it back into the pub
afterwards!
Nick de Stefani from Car 6 was the celebrity
of the night in his ‘Bring back the
Biff’ outfit, taking on one of the toughest
cowboys in Fred Brophy’s Boxing tent
and coming out relatively unscathed! After
the races it turned into party night at the
Birdsville Pub before heading back to camp
and hitting the swags.
The Great Escape says goodbye to Birdsville
on Sunday as it makes it’s way to
Bedourie.
