Today we left Windorah and headed
straight onto a forest track to start
the long trip
towards Thargomindah. The roads were
dry and dusty, although at times we
did
start to see a bit more vegetation
in the paddocks than we had seen previously.
In
parts the cars were driving through
some heavy bull dust, which was very
fine and managed to find its way into
everything! Apart from drivers having
to take care with
the reduced visibility due to the dust
they also had to keep an eye out for
the road
trains, as the areas we travelled through
are particularly active with oil wells
and
exploration.
Upon reaching Eromanga, the furthest
town in Australia from the sea, most
people
were wishing there was a bit more time
for a swim in the pool, although everyone
enjoyed the fresh lunch before heading
off again for the next big stint of “wackos”
(these are the more rough and challenging
sections of the rally).
All the wacko driving after lunch was
done through private property, “Noccundra &
Orient”, which was a great privilege,
and much enjoyed by drivers and passengers
alike as we travelled through the McGregor
Range and into the Grey Range of
South West Queensland. A little bit
of mud (it must rain here sometimes
after all!)
and some steep creek crossing made
for interesting travelling before arriving
into
Thargomindah to a warm welcome from
school children lining the footpaths.
Dinner at the hall was followed
by the presentation of medals and
patches to our
wonderful fundraising entrants and
volunteers acknowledging the hard work
everyone has put into making the
Great Escape such a success and a
great
fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Australia.
An auction was also held raising almost
$2000 which was in addition to the
$480 raised by Thargomindah Police
to keep
our very own Reg Ragen in their holding-cell
for the night – his boisterous
antics
must have been getting a little tiring!
With some running repairs to a few
cars completed in Thargomindah, the
rally is
again raring to go, leaving early tomorrow
morning for our ‘Mystery Station’,
near
Willcania tomorrow night.
