The final day! Today the emphasis was less on driving, and much more on the people portion of the equation. This morning started off with cars crossing the ferry in Swan Reach, then heading to the town of Nurioopta where the final wacko of the Great Escape was completed. Everybody was in high spirits upon the finish and this carried on into the afternoon where there was abundant cheer and plentiful congratulations all about. 38 out of the 39 cars that originally started in Penrith finished today, a remarkable feat. Thanks to the support crews and volunteers who put so much time in to keeping us on the road.

The evening was a celebration of the Great Escape. There were several awards that were handed out, and many people were recognized for outstanding actions. Special acknowledgement must be made to Teresa Carlson and Sharyn Shaw who raised in excess of $50 thousand dollars placing them first on the fundraising awards. Congratulations also goes out to the Low Rider team for finishing first overall. Emmah Money, CFA Ambassador, and also the winner of the Girlfriend of the Year Award was a special guest tonight and moved the crowd with her personal experiences with Cystic Fibrosis. A book that she had authored, “The Words Inside” had been signed by her and every participant in the room. This was later auctioned off, and fetched an incredible $2000! A very special thanks to the LJ Hooker team from Menai who purchased the item, and if that wasn’t enough, they even donated the book back to CFA for use in the future! This is the kind of spirit that makes the Great Escape so incredible. To all those recipients and people who successfully navigated the course, congratulations on a job well done!

That’s it for the 2008 Great Escape. We had an incredible time and many great memories were made. Several people were talking about next year, and I too am looking forward to that time. Until then, all the best and may you navigate the road of life successfully.

P.S. – final pictures will be posted on Monday
