DAY 9 : Frances to Swan Reach

Today was the last big day on the road, and it was an exciting and challenging one! The morning started on a chilly and fresh note, but the staff in Frances warmed us with a hearty breakfast, and country hospitality. From there, the path wound through Bordertown and Lameroo to eventually reach Swan Reach.

Many of the routes travelled on today were a combination or back country roads, and sandy trails. The most challenging section of road was certainly reserved for the last real day of driving! Cars were bogged down in the sand all over the course and it became customary for groups of cars to cluster in order to help each other through the ordeal. Yours truly got stuck no less than four times, and each of those times; another car or support vehicle came to our aid by digging us out or helping with a tow or nudge. In short, while the driving was challenging; it was also a median to grow friendships and comradery.

There were, of course many crazy antics along the way. Videographer Lucas Li had a rough day today. He was the victim of car 89’s sudden infatuation with throwing flour at people. Lucas also got covered in sand by another vehicle during the apex of a turn. Covered in flour, covered in sand, Lucas became a dirty, and off-coloured videographer! It’s ok though, because car 89 got some of what was coming back to them when Ness and Jamie took to the silly string and hit them up during the first photoshoot. Call it justice.

Getting through the day took patience, determination and lots of throttle! Finishing the course, participants were greeted by the quaint town of Swan Reach, a wonderful dinner and well-deserved cold drink along the picturesque bank of the river. Tomorrow we will finish our trip with a short 100 km journey to the Barossa Valley, followed by an awards banquet. While we are excited to see all of you, we also know that, and we will miss many of the new friendships formed on this trip.

Enjoy your night, we know we will!
