It was a slow start to the day after an enjoyable
late night and sleeping under the
stars on Killara station. Justin and Julie
McClure kindly hosted a hearty breakfast
for
us before we began to make our way to Tibooburra.
Today’s Bone Head Award went to Teresa
Carlson. During yesterday’s rally a
fellow driver informed her she was dragging some
wire behind her. Thinking nothing of it,
she continued until she heard loud thuds
coming from behind the vehicle. On
stopping for a closer inspection, she realised
she had been dragging a fence behind
her!
It was an easy ride into Tibooburra. With
long, straight roads that seem to stretch
for miles, we sailed through the day over the
450km run. We stopped off for a quick
lunch at the Wanaaring Hotel, before pushing
through the final stretch of our journey.
Tibooburra boasts two pubs, a servo with
local store and a drive in movie theatre – of
which we made great use! Squeezing 45 cars
into a 12 car carpark was a laugh. The
theme was ‘boots and bonnets’,
referring to the boot and bonnet of your
car. But a few people decided to dress up
their own, personal boots and bonnets – donning
colourful hats and shoes. Roz, Sharyn and
Teresa got into the spirit, wearing tutu’s
and sparkling hats.
Before the main feature, we paid tribute
to a great friend and veteran of the Great
Escape, Mal Bowman, who sadly passed away
recently. Although he couldn’t be with
us tonight, he certain was in spirit. In
true Mal form we raised a glass of brandy
and lit a smoke, as we saluted and said good bye
to a great mate.
Sitting closely by the fire, the bar or getting
cozy in the back seat, we watched the
original Dukes of Hazard and settled in for
the night. Tomorrow is a big day as we
reach the apex of our journey – The
Burke and Wills Dig Tree!
