The Great Escape is a Charity Motoring
Event that travels through the Australian
outback in VIC, SA, NSW and QLD raising
much-needed funds and awareness for Cystic
Fibrosis Australia. If you love old cars,
the Australian outback, and the sound of
travelling with many colourful characters
enjoying the fun and antics along the way,
The Great Escape is right for you! The Great
Escape is not a speed event, however entrants
will enjoy driving over some very unique
outback roads and potentially some rivers
crossings.
Don't like roughing
it? There's always an alternative…
We are proud to say that our rally caters
for all walks of life. From those that love
the adventure of challenging tracks right
through to those that like to skip through
the byways and get to town as soon as possible.
The main course each day takes in mostly
good gravel roads through to picturesque
country, however, every now and then Road
Boss throws in a little challenge to subdue
the appetite of the diehard adventurer.
If this isn't your cup of tea, then there
is always an alternate route to get you
around the rough bits and into town without
any fuss or fear.
The Older, the Bolder
& Weirder the Better!
On the Great Escape we encourage the
cars and crews to get a little crazy in
dressing up both the car and crew. The bolder
and weirder you all are, the better your
chance of grabbing a well deserved trophy
or two and raising the profile of Cystic
Fibrosis!
Can I take my Car?
The Great Escape will let any old car have
go. As long as your chosen vehicle is legally
road registered, road worthy, has all of
the compulsory equipment, is at least 20
years old and non-4WD, it's eligible. A
few of the items you will need are a UHF
radio, orange flashing light and a trip
metre to find your way around. You will
find a fully detailed list of Vehicle requirements
in the "Rules & Requirements".
Although the course won't use heart-breaking
roads, your vehicle will need to be able
to handle 4500km of the Australian outback
and the odd station track!
Meet "Rosie"
and her Crew!
"Rosie" is the official rally
car of Cystic Fibrosis Australia (CFA) and
with an enormous rose on the roof is hard
to miss!
Why the rose? This dates back to the story
of a little boy whose sister had Cystic
Fibrosis. In trying to pronounce his sister's
condition, the little boy could only say
"sixty five roses", hence the
rose symbol which is used by Cystic Fibrosis
nationally. The national awareness day for
Cystic Fibrosis is "65 Roses Day"
and is celebrated in May each year.
You'll find Cystic Fibrosis Australia's
CEO Terry Stewart behind the wheel of "Rosie"
and he'll be teaming up again this year
with his 2006 navigator Sally Elliott. Terry
loves to have as much fun as our rally participants
and is looking forward to another fantastic
rally.
